New Centre for Material Futures Opens Its Doors
A cross-disciplinary lab where scientists and artists prototype the materials of tomorrow
The university has unveiled its Centre for Material Futures, a 1,200 square-metre facility shared between the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Fine Art. The centre pairs polymer chemists and ceramicists at the same benches, betting that the most interesting materials emerge where research rigour meets studio intuition.
Its first cohort of resident researchers will spend the year developing bio-based composites for sculpture, self-healing glazes, and pigments grown from bacteria. Public open days are planned each term so visitors can see work in progress.
