Black is an experimental animated short by Ao Chen that examines the vaccine-related social problem described in Annecy’s official synopsis as “black-hearted vaccines” in China. Combining drawing on paper with 2D computer animation, the film approaches its subject through a non-verbal form, without dialogue or explanatory commentary. Its imagery is accompanied by music composed by Chen. Annecy Festival

The festival’s description presents the work as both an expression of concern and an examination of a social issue. Within this framing, Black can be read as a reflection on the vulnerability and trust involved when people depend on products intended to protect their health. This interpretation places questions of care, responsibility and public confidence alongside the film’s exploration of animation as a medium for addressing difficult social subjects. Annecy Festival

Produced by Red Feather Animation Studio as a China–United Kingdom co-production, the three-minute film features animation by Ao Chen and Fei Chen. Chen also undertook the roles of producer, screenwriter, editor and composer. Blackwas selected for the Off-Limits Short Films in Competition programme at the 2020 Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
