丈量 (Measure)
Site-specific installation and 3D visualisation, in collaboration with Flo Yuting Zhu
Measure brings together sculptural footprints and a speculative digital map to explore relationships between bodies, animals and landscape. Developed during the STRATA Project residency with 1:4:9 Art in Toli County, Xinjiang, China, the work responds to a marble quarry and surrounding Gobi terrain that once lay beneath an ancient ocean. Silicone casts gradually transform human footprints into those of an imagined half-human, half-gazelle creature, tracing a passage through the landscape.
Alongside the physical intervention, Kuhn produced 3D renders of a speculative 20-kilometre trail. These connect the installation to his research into animals, biomes and cartography. The collaboration explores the limits of mapping, using bodily movement, imitation and traces as alternative ways of encountering a place. The footprints eventually reach the quarry’s edge, where the imagined creature’s journey meets the excavated landscape.
