Shepherds of Naar

Documentary film | Editor

Shepherds of Naar is a documentary directed by Asmita Shrish and edited by Sustika Limbu, following the lives of yak herders in Nepal’s Annapurna region. The film examines the challenges of sustaining pastoral livelihoods and inherited cultural practices in a demanding mountain environment. As the herders take their animals to higher grazing grounds, they encounter dangerous terrain, thinner air and limited access to water and vegetation. Their journeys connect the physical demands of everyday work with questions of cultural continuity and belonging.

Combining interviews with landscape cinematography and aerial imagery, the documentary places individual experiences within the wider environment that shapes them. The mountain landscape emerges not simply as a dramatic setting, but as a place of labour, knowledge and interdependence between people and animals. The film received the Satyajit Ray Golden Award for Best Documentary at the sixth South Asian Short Film Festival.
