
Luca Zappala
Luca Zappala is a Lecturer in Film Production, Visual Effects and Colour Grading in the
Department of Culture, Communication & Media at the UCL Institute of Education (IOE). He also
worked with other academic institutions as consultant.
Alongside his academic role, Luca maintains a career in the film and television industry as a
filmmaker and Visual Effects Supervisor. His practice bridges creative storytelling, visual effects
production, and emerging digital technologies, bringing current industry expertise into teaching and
curriculum development.
Luca, originally from Tuscany, Italy, blended his traditional art studies with a passion for digital arts
and film and a programming degree from the Technical Institute in Lucca. He further honed his
skills at Canada's NAD Centre, focusing on Film and 3D Animation. Luca moved to London and
launched his VFX career at Cinesite, contributing as an FX technical director on films like “The
Golden Compass”, “Eragon”, and “X-Men: The Last Stand”.
Over the course of his career, Luca has contributed to over sixty feature films and television
productions. His credits include Academy Award-winning films such as “Inception”, “Hugo”, and
“Ex Machina”, as well as BAFTA-winning productions including “The Creator”, “Harry Potter and
the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” and “T2 Trainspotting”. His work spans both large-scale studio
productions and independent filmmaking, with a particular focus on integrating creative and
technical approaches to visual storytelling.
Recent projects include serving as Visual Effects Supervisor on “Stranger Things” (Season 4),
“Fate: The Winx Saga” (Season 2), “The Creator”, “Rocketman”, “Mothering Sunday”, “Living”,
“Avenue 5”, “Falling”, and “Palestine 36”.
Luca's work has received industry recognition, including being shortlisted for the 33rd European
Film Awards for Excellence in Visual Effects for “Falling” and receiving an early nomination for
the British Independent Film Awards for Best Effects for “Mothering Sunday”.
In addition to his work in visual effects, Luca is an independent filmmaker. “Fracta”, his latest short
film (as of May 2026), has been nominated for Best Short Film and Best Director at the Barcelona
Indie Film Festival (BARCIFF).
