The Sound of Archetypes
The Sound of Archetypes explores the translation of Tarot archetypes into immersive sonic worlds. Its methodology, provides a systematic framework for interpreting symbolic meanings and emotional qualities through sound. Subsequent studio experimentation has prompted an investigation into how specific production techniques may evoke pareidolia and conceptual blending, and whether these processes also help explain why Tarot readings resonate. This shifts the research from examining how sonic archetypes are created towards understanding why they may be meaningful to listeners.
The project involves developing immersive Dolby Atmos productions for all 22 Major Arcana cards, with the production process documented and recorded for research. Each archetype requires approximately a month of exploration, encompassing the interpretation of symbolism, experimentation with acoustic mappings, and the development of distinct sonic worldbuilding rules. This approach allows unexpected sonic possibilities to emerge through the relationship between symbolic interpretation and production practice.
Beyond these sonic translations, the research is expanding towards a mixed-reality installation in which participants can physically navigate archetypal worlds, with projection mapping extending the experience into the surrounding environment. An initial pilot installation was envisaged for late spring 2026, with partnerships being explored to support its development.
The project was presented at the International Symposium on Computer Music Multidisciplinary Research (CMMR) 2025 in London, in the paper “The Sound of Archetypes: A Case Study in Immersive Sonic Translation of the Major Arcana”.
