Anthony Bourached

Associate Professor in Machine Learning and Creative AI

Anthony Bourached is Associate Professor of Machine Learning & Creative AI at UCL in IOE Culture, Communication & Media and the CS Centre for AI. He is co-founder of Oxia Palus, which uses AI to resurrect lost and hidden artworks, and is an O-1 (Extraordinary Ability) visa recipient.

His research sits at the intersection of generative AI, computer vision, and cultural heritage — developing tools for art authentication and reconstruction, and benchmarks for evaluating deep reasoning in AI systems. His work has been exhibited at the Musée du Louvre and the Saatchi Gallery, and featured in the BBC, CNN, MIT Technology Review, Smithsonian Magazine, The Guardian, and The Telegraph. Oxia Palus was named the 3rd biggest AI development story of 2019 by NVIDIA.

“Art is humanity’s densest reservoir of cultural information,” he told BBC World News; “decoding it demands the most complex tool we have—artificial intelligence. To paraphrase Turing; 'only a complex model can solve a complex problem.'” His research has been covered by CNN, MIT Tech Review, Times Radio, and others, and underpins clinical, museological, and creative applications worldwide.

He holds a PhD in Machine Learning and Neuroscience from UCL (with visiting research at Harvard), an MSc in Machine Learning from UCL, an MSc in High Performance Computing from the University of Edinburgh, and a BA in Theoretical Physics from Trinity College Dublin.
